How to use Remove Background

Upload a photo -- a product shot, a portrait, any image with a subject you want isolated from its background. The first time you use the tool on a given visit, it downloads a small AI model (a machine learning model trained specifically to distinguish foreground subjects from backgrounds) to your browser; this initial download can take anywhere from a few seconds to closer to a minute depending on your connection, but only happens once per session, since the model stays cached in your browser after that. Every image you process after that first one runs through the already-downloaded model and completes much faster, typically within a few seconds even for a reasonably large photo.

Once processing finishes, you'll see the result with the background removed and replaced with transparency, ready to download as a PNG (the format that actually supports transparent backgrounds -- a JPG can't represent a transparent area, so PNG is what's used for the output regardless of what format you uploaded). From there you can use the transparent-background image directly, or drop it onto a new background of your choice in an image editor.

When to use it

The most direct use case is product photography for an online listing or store -- isolating a product from its original background so it can sit on a clean white background or be composited onto a styled scene for marketing. It's equally useful for profile photos where you want a consistent, simple background across a team page, for creating stickers or cutout-style graphics from a photo, or for any situation where you have a photo with a subject but want to swap out or remove whatever's behind them without manually tracing the outline in an image editor.

When not to use it

For very fine, wispy detail -- flyaway hair strands, semi-transparent fabric, smoke, or glass -- automated background removal is genuinely imperfect at capturing every strand or subtle transparency perfectly; a professional photo editor doing manual masking will still outperform an automated tool for that specific kind of detail. If your image already has a plain, solid-color background (a photo shot specifically against a green screen or white backdrop, for instance), a simpler color-based background removal approach can sometimes give a cleaner edge than the AI-based approach this tool uses, since it doesn't need to guess where the subject ends.

Tips for best results

Photos with clear contrast between the subject and background (a person against a plain wall, a product on a simple surface) tend to produce the cleanest edges -- busy, cluttered backgrounds or subjects wearing colors very close to the background color are the cases most likely to need a manual touch-up afterward in an image editor. If you're processing several photos in the same session for a consistent batch (a set of product photos, say), doing them one after another in the same browser tab is faster than reloading the page between each one, since the AI model stays loaded in memory rather than needing to download again.

Limitations

Very large images (several thousand pixels on the longest side) are automatically scaled down before processing to keep things fast and avoid running out of browser memory -- for most common uses like product photos or profile pictures this scaling isn't noticeable, but if you need an extremely high-resolution cutout for large-format printing, this automatic downscaling may not preserve enough detail. Some restrictive corporate or school networks block the initial AI model download (since it's a genuine file fetch, not just a page load), which shows as a clear error rather than a silent failure -- if that happens, trying from a different network usually resolves it.

Privacy

Every part of this tool's process -- the AI model itself, running the model against your photo, and generating the final transparent-background image -- happens on-device, inside your own browser. Your photo is never uploaded to any server; only the AI model file itself is downloaded (once, and cached) since that's the actual software doing the background detection, not your image.
