Does redacting actually remove the content, or just hide it visually?

It permanently removes the underlying content in the redacted area, not just draws a black box over it visually -- an important distinction, since a visual-only cover can sometimes still be selected or extracted from the original data underneath.

Can I search for text instead of manually drawing every box?

Accepted Answer

Yes -- type what you're looking for (a name, account number, or any other text) and click Find & Mark to automatically mark every place it appears across the document. Review the marks before applying -- search finds exact matches within individual text runs, so a name split across two separate runs (an unusual line wrap, for instance) may not be caught, and manual marking is still worth double-checking for anything critical.

What's the difference between this and Watermark?

Accepted Answer

This genuinely removes content from the document. Watermark is purely visual -- it stamps text or a logo on top of the page without removing or hiding anything underneath, and the original content stays fully present and extractable. If the goal is actually deleting sensitive information, use Redact; if the goal is labeling a document (draft, confidential, branded), use Watermark.

Does this also remove hidden metadata, like the document's author name?

Accepted Answer

Only if you check "Also clear document metadata" before applying -- that clears title, author, subject, keywords, and producer/creator fields, since a PDF's metadata can independently reveal who created it even after the visible content is redacted. It's off by default since not every redaction needs it.

Will pages I don't mark be affected at all?

Accepted Answer

No -- pages with no redaction marks are copied over completely unchanged, still real, searchable vector content. Only the specific pages you mark get flattened into images.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

Accepted Answer

No -- both marking and applying redactions, including text search, run entirely in your browser. Your PDF never leaves your device.

Question 7

Can I undo a redaction after downloading?

Accepted Answer

No -- once applied and downloaded, the redacted content is genuinely gone from that file, not recoverable. Keep your original, unredacted file if you might need the removed content again for a different purpose.

Question 8

What should I do after redacting if the document needs to stay restricted?

Accepted Answer

Use PDF Password next to require a password to open the redacted file -- redaction removes specific content, but doesn't by itself restrict who can open the resulting document.
